Adoption Education

While away, Chris and I are working on our adoption education- a mandatory requirement for our adoption. We are using an online program from Adoption Learning Partners, which means we can take the classes anywhere! 

We just finished two more classes : Adopting an Older Child and Conspicuous Families.

Both were helpful in reframing our family's conversation- first, recognizing that a child of about three is an older child- who knew! And second, everyone is going to have an opinion of our family. And the fact that our family will look different means people will feel like they have the right to weigh in on our decision to adopt.   

(Here we are taking our online class- one of us is paying attention, and one of us is photobombing...)

Each step of this journey is blessing us and challenging us to think beyond where we have been to where God is calling us to go.

The Long Winding Road

Today, the girls and I were heading out to camp on a long winding road. We began the conversation about our Haiti Baby. "Mom," Eden (9) asked, "Will our Haiti baby have a mom and dad in Haiti?" "Maybe," I reply. And the conversation began - again - about the realities of orphans in third world countries. "Maybe his mom and dad died," Bethany - who is 5, replied. "Maybe," I muster. "Or maybe his mom and dad don't have enough food and water to take care of him," Eden finishes. Leaving the small town we live in, we have to eventually turn onto a narrow road, barely enough space for two lanes. Our conversation shifts. To thoughts about how we are called to do the work of justice and of mercy. Of not just opening our hearts and homes to orphans, but also the call to the hard work of orphan prevention.
